What are Gemstones?

Crystals are formed under great amounts of pressure and heat deep in the bowels of the Earth. They are then brought to the surface by seismic or volcanic activity. A gemstone is a piece of a mineral crystal that was cut and polished in order to be used as jewelry or other adornments. Gemstones are also called gems, precious stones or semi-precious stones.

Each gemstone has a unique chemical structure. This affects the way gems absorb and reflect the light. Human eyes are only able to see colors between 380 and 750 nanometers. That is why gemstones that absorb the full spectrum of these wavelengths will appear black to us. While those that all light wavelengths can pass through will look absolutely colorless. There are also gemstones that absorb some wavelengths and let others pass through them. These are the gems that come in fascinating colors.

Precious Gemstones & Semi-Precious Gemstones

There exist two types of gemstones: semi-precious gemstones and precious gemstones. The distinction between the two goes back to the ancient Greeks and is still followed in modern Western cultures. Gemstones are classified by the rarity and quality. People consider diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires to be precious gemstones. They are very rare, translucent, have a flawless grade and are very hard. Most gems with a hardness of 8 to 10 Mohs. All other gemstones are generally considered semi-precious due to their rarity, translucency and hardness. Due to their qualities precious gems and jewels are often more expensive and admirable.

However, it might be difficult to place an appropriate price tag on a particular gemstone. Because the traditional distinction does not necessarily reflect modern values – like design, trends etc. For example, a garnet is a stylish semi-precious gemstone that comes in a deep red color much like ruby. But it’s not that rare, ranks lower on a Mohs scale of hardness, and, unlike ruby, may reflect a rainbow of colors including yellows and greens. You would think that it doesn’t make it less unique and beautiful. But it will always be a reason for a lower price tag.

Gemstone Colors, Clarity & Carat

Colors

Gemstone colors depend on the atomic structure of the crystal gems and the way they reflect light. The chemical composition of atoms creates impurities within gemstones. When daylight strikes the gem, it absorbs most of the colors. At the same time it reflects a smaller amount of a particular frequency or wavelength. A bit that is reflected reaches our eyes, and we see it as a perceived color. For example, a ruby has an intense red color because it absorbs all other colors of daylight and reflects the red.

Typically, gemstones with clear, intense and visually distinct colors are considered most valuable. Of course there are many gemstone colors that nature has to offer. And when it comes to gemstones for sale everyone can find a perfect gem for their needs.

Clarity

The next important factor in the value of crystal gems is clarity. Gemstone clarity refers to the presence of inclusions in the gem. Inclusions are small spots or imperfections within a gemstone. They affect overall durability and appearance of the gemstone. Before putting gemstones for sale dealers will assign them a clarity grade. The grade is based on how visible in the inclusions are.  There are three main categories. Such as inclusion free gems, eye-clean and gemstones with noticeable inclusions. Inclusion free gemstones are considered most valuable. They are more likely to be used for jewelry.

Carat

The carat refers to the weight of the gemstone. Each carat is about two hundred milligrams or one fifth of a gram. Carat weight is the factor that impacts the price of the gemstone the most. Because as the gemstone gets larger and increases in carat weight it becomes much more rare. It’s much easier for a jeweler to find raw materials to make gemstones smaller pieces. Therefore, the price for higher carat raises exponentially.

There are some types of gemstones however that can be similar in size but less dense than the others. And therefore will also differ greatly in value. For example, emerald is less dense than ruby. So one carat ruby can be smaller than a one carat emerald.

Gemstone Meanings

Healing gemstones have energetic vibrations much like a human body. This makes possible for us to align our vibrations with theirs and benefit from their healing properties. Gemstones have a very powerful effect when held in hands or placed directly on the body.

which makes us naturally receptive to the vibrations of gemstones as they can align our own vibrations with theirs. This is why healing crystals and gemstones have a powerful vibratory effect when placed directly on your body. This energy surges from the crystal to you, which facilitates the free flow of energy throughout the body.

Our gemstones and healing crystals serve as a tool to help connect our conscious thoughts with our body. With healing stones, the real game-changer is when you program them with a specific intention for transformation. Thoughts can be powerful because they direct energy and energy follows thought. And when you use gemstones in the process, their frequencies help to magnify those thoughts and intentions.
